    FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS POLITICS HAVE BEEN DOMINANT IN THE LIFE OF ATHENS, BUT EVEN A FULL POLITICAL CRISIS CANNOT KEEP CULTURE OUT OF THE HEADLINES FOR LONG....AND THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE OF SCULPTURE TO BE INAUGURATED IN ATHENS TOMORROW (WEDNESDAY) IS CERTAINLY A HEADLINE EVENT IN THE WORLD OF ART AND SCULPTURE.

    FOR THE NEXT SIX WEEKS SOME 150 MASTERPIECES FROM 61 GALLERIES AND MUSEUMS IN ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD, WILL BE ON DISPLAY AGAINST THE DRAMATIC BACKGROUND OF THE HILL OF THE MUSES - THE FIR-CLAD ELOPE WHICH RISES BESIDE THE STEEPER, ROCKY SLOPES OF THE ACROPOLIS.

    THE EXHIBITION HAS COST THE GREEK GOVERNMENT FIVE MILLION DRACHMAE (APPROXIMATELY GBP60,000) TO STAGE, AND THE EXHIBITS HAVE BEEN INSURED WITH LLOYDS OF LONDON FOR 30-MILLION DOLLARS. MANY OF THE WORLD FAMOUS PIECES WERE BROUGHT ACROSS EUROPE IN TRUCK CONVOYS UNDER STRICT ARMED ESCORT.

    THE EXHIBITION SETTING IS A CHALLENGE TO THE MODERN SCULPTORS AND THEIR WORK, FOR THE ART OF SCULPTURE WAS BORN HERE SOME 2500 YEARS AGO. SCULPTORS FROM 17 COUNTRIES ARE TAKING PART RANGING FROM RODIN AND PICASSO TO DALI AND BARBARA HEPWORTH.
