  • Description

About twenty Arab students were staging a hunger strike on Friday (October 6) in the Bonn offices of the Arab League in protest at the banning in West Germany of two organisations -- the General Union of Palestinian Workers (GUPA) and the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS).

By Friday at least 25 Arabs had been expelled from West Germany and another 15 were under arrest pending deportation.

The Federal Government banned the two organisations because, it said, they sympathised with and supported guerrilla actions in West Germany. Interior Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher said the action was aimed at preventing 'fresh acts of terror' which were threatened following the Munich killings of eleven Israeli Olympic team members.

The two banned organisations have about 2,000 members. There are believed to be nearly 60,000 Arabs living in West Germany.

A spokesman for the hunger strikers said the persecution and deportation of Arabs was unconstitutional and claimed it had been ordered to please the Israeli Government.
