  • Description

Ten people were killed, and 35 injured ... 10 critically... when a 3-storey building collapsed in Inchon, South Korea on Saturday (August 7).

The collapse is thought to have been caused by ground vibrations from a nearby market-place site where piles were being driven into the ground. The building is situated near the entrance to an underpass serving the Inchon to Seoul railroad.

U.S. troops stationed in Inchon, which is a western-coast port, were rushed to the building to help a joint rescue team of police and Homeland Reserve Force members. The troops provided not only extra manpower, but also a fleet of heavy lifting and moving equipment, including a 25-ton crane.

Survivors were admitted to city hospitals for emergency treatment.
