REPORTER: "In a race against the Security council vote the Israelis were on the move again, trying to get as far north as possible before a peace-keeping force move in. As the armoured columns moved towards the last objectives before the Litani river and the port city of Tyre .....artillery pounded their way north. The armour met little resistance, their guns had done an effective job. Infantry in helicopters hovered over the advancing columns. One major objective the town of Kano, the gateway of Tyre. The tanks approached cautiously, they halted just outside the town. The Israelis usually send in........sappers first to blow up the Palestinian headquarters...that was the signal to move in. Not many people were left after the bombardment. Kano was the major objective on the way to Tyre, but with that obstacle gone the tanks rolled on, for Tyre, the coast and the Litani River."

Background: Israeli troops were pushing deeper into Lebanon on Sunday (19 March) as the Security Council demanded their replacement by a United Nations peacekeeping force. The move had advanced the Israeli forces well beyond the six-mile (10 kilometre) buffer zone they had talked about when they began the attack five days before (14 March). On Sunday (19 March) the Israelis advanced over 10 miles (16 kilometres), capturing the town of Kano on their way to the coastal city of Tyre.

SYNOPSIS: The ancient city of Tyre was the main target for Israeli midfighters.

The air attack paved the way for Israeli ground forces to move northwards. This report comes from Jack Reynolds of the National Broadcasting Company Incorporated.
