  • Description

Israeli troops were pushing deeper into Lebanon on Sunday (19 March) as the Security Council demanded their replacement by a United Nations peacekeeping force. The move had advanced the Israeli forces well beyond the six-mile (10 kilometre) buffer zone they had talked about when they began the attack five days before (14 March). On Sunday (19 March) the Israelis advanced over 10 miles (16 kilometres), capturing the town of Kano on their way to the coastal city of Tyre.

SYNOPSIS: The ancient city of Tyre was the main target for Israeli midfighters.

The air attack paved the way for Israeli ground forces to move northwards. This report comes from Jack Reynolds of the National Broadcasting Company Incorporated.
