  • Description

Plans to form a Mozambique African National Union to oust the Portuguese from East Africa were drafted at a conference in Mombasa Feb 18-19.

Delegates - and witch doctors - of tribes in Portuguese-ruled Mozambique listened as Michael Chokwe, a candidate of the Kenya African National Union, said Mozambique Africans working on East African sisal plantations would be asked to go back to their home country to start an underground movement.

He also said appeals would be made to the United Nations, and discussions would be held with African nationalist leaders on joint tactics to free Mozambique from Portuguese rule.

The conference, arranged by the East African Goan League with the support of the Kenya African National Union, decided to set up the Mozambique African National Union with headquarters in Tanganyika. Omari Ndianga, a Kenya African, was appointed interim president of the group.
