  • Description

Liverpool slithered to a 4-3 victory against Birmingham City on Saturday (December 2) in an action-packed soccer thriller waged in pouring rain.

But although Liverpool, playing in red shirts, chalked up four goals to Birmingham's three, they by no means had an easy time of it -- and were twice two goals down.

This was English soccer at its best -- and English weather at its very worst. For despite a downpour that left the pitch like a quagmire, the spectators drenched and the players saturated and mud-spattered, the thrill-a-minute battle was a superb display of brilliant ball control, masterly strategy and goal-getting spirit.

The scoring opened in the 12th minute. Liverpool, who took the initiative from the start, list the ball to Taylor, who slammed it into the net from 25 yards. The, seven minuets later, Birmingham made another fast breakaway with Hatton heading the ball to Hope to increase the lead to 2-0.

Liverpool made it 2-1 in the 31st minute, when Hughes turned aside a free kick for Lindsay to score from 22 yards. The fast, unrelenting football continued unabated and Birmingham had increased their lead in the 42nd minute to 3-1 -- only to see Cormack of Liverpool convert a Keegan centre to make it 3-2 one minute later.

Neither the pace nor the excitement diminished in the second ??? half -- when the rain was so heavy that even the referee caught cramp and the players slid for yards every time they fell. Ten minutes after the start of the second half, Lindsay... taking a 25-yard free kick ... had Liverpool level.

Scenting victory, Liverpool rapidly showed their superiority -- despite several near misses by Birmingham. And victory came -- in the 77th minute, when Toshack gathered a long clearance from Clewence and went through the centre. The goal had Birmingham keeper Kelly in despair in the mud -- and gave Liverpool a league record on their home ground of 18 wins in 18 games this year.

Birmingham into the attack, and Hatton heads the ball to Hope to increase the lead to two goals to nil.

A free kick to Liverpool, and Hughes turns it aside for Lindsay to score. It's two goals to one, with the fast, unrelenting football continuing unabated.

Birmingham launch another attack, and with forty-two minutes of the match gone, Latchford scores to make it three-one.

Liverpool return to the attack, and from a Kegan centre, Cormack converts for Liverpool, bringing them one goal closer.

The second half, and with the rain now falling heavily, the pace of the game continues undiminished, Lindsay scores from outside the penalty box to make it three goals each.
