  • Description

Twelve British schoolchildren - six girls and six boys - spent a weekend in London, Nov. 15, as a prize for winning their way into the finals of a nation-wide essay contest on Australia.

From the twelve finalists, two will be chosen to represent British youth on a sponsored tour of Australia next year.

The schoolchildren - aged 11-16 - attended a reception in Australia House to meet Sir Eric Harrison, High Commissioner to Britain, and other Australian diplomats. Following their official welcome, the contestants - each accompanied by an Australian child of the same age - placed their winning essays in a special box. After sealing, the box was handed to Qantas jet airliner captain, Harry Manley, who flies the essays to Canberra for final judging by the Minister of Immigration, A. R. Downer.

Name of the winning children - a boy and a girl - will be announced December 1.

Aim of the essay competition, arranged by the Australian Immigration Department and two British companies, is to stimulate interest in the Commonwealth country - as a land of opportunity for young people. The finalists will spend six weeks in Australia, travelling more than 30,000 miles.
