Background: The Northern Jordanian town of Irbid was quiet on Tuesday (17 November), following clashes in Irbid and neighbouring Jerash the day before (16 November) between Palestinian commandos and Government troops in which 1 people were reportedly killed. The Palestine Commando Organisation(PLO) said the clash began Monday morning between patrols of the two sides and spread to other parts of the town.

Tuesday, shops were closed b tense citizens and the streets of the city were almost deserted. Members of the Arab Observer Mission kept watch on the situation, carrying green flags and wearing green armbands.

The mission is entrusted with implementing military aspects of the agreements between the Jordanian Government and the PLO which arose out of the fierce civil fighting of last September.

Doctors attended to the 71 people who were injured in the clash.

Fighting also broke out along the road to Jerash and damaged commando and army vehicles were reportedly still there on Tuesday.

The two sides had accused each other of being responsible for the day-long clashes, described as the first large-scale incident since last September's fighting in which thousands of people were killed or wounded.
