  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The health ministers of the Gulf States, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are trying to set up a training centre for specialised staff to repair medical equipment. It has been decided to start work on such a centre in Iraq -- and the United Nations' World Health Organisation (WHO) has agreed to help.

SYNOPSIS: The medical equipment repair centre was one of several projects discussed at the three day meeting in Abu Dhabi which is being held to extend cooperation between the Gulf States in health and medical care. The health ministers also reviewed the possibility of setting up medical equipment repair centres in individual Gulf States. The conference chairman United Arab Emirates Health Minister Khalfan Al Roumi told the delegates that the United Arab Emirates has contributed five million Kuwait dinars (about two and a half million pounds sterling) to the Arab organisation of medical industries, and one million United States dollars (about 555,000 pounds sterling) to the United Nations World Health Organisation.

The United Arab Emirates Health Minister added that his country had forfeited its right to the World Health Organisation's services so the aid could be diverted to poorer countries. The conference agenda also includes co-operation in fighting epidemics such as malaria; co-ordinating drug purchasing policies; and the establishment of a Gulf nursing college.
