  • Description

A party of crippled Vietnamese children were flown home to Da Nang in South Vietnam on Friday (1 August), under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Also included in the party of returning children was one Cambodian child.

Before boarding the 'plane at Vientiane Airport, the children were given a party, and entertainment was provided for them by a group of Laotian dancers. They were given a meal at the airport. There was also an orchestra to provide music.

During the trip the children were escorted by a man and a woman who were described as UNHCR officials. The Laotian Caravells aircraft which was to carry them back to Vietnam, bore the UNHCR livery and insignia.

Many thousands of Vietnamese orphans were evacuated to the United States and other Western countries in the last weeks of the old South Vietnamese regime. This was repeatedly denounced by Communist spokesmen and generally resented in Saigon, even by Vietnamese who did not sympathise with the Communists.
