  • Description

TAY NINH PROVINCE, NORTH-WEST OF SAIGON AND BORDERING CAMBODIA, HAS SEEN SOME OF THE BLOODIEST FIGHTING IN VIETNAM IN THE PAST TWELVE MONTHS. VIETCONG AND NORTH VIETNAMESE FORCES, WHICH SEVERAL TIMES HAVE ENTERED THE PROVINCIAL CAPITAL OF TAY NINH CITY, ARE THOUGHT TO BE PLANNING ANOTHER INVASION IN A BID TO OCCUPY PART OF THE CITY AND CLAIM IT AS THE SEAT OF THE NEWLY-PROCLAIMED PROVISIONAL REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT. NOW SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS - THE ARVN (ARMY OF REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM) - HAVE MOVED INTO THE AREA TO BOLSTER AMERICAN FORCES.

THE ARVN (OR ARVIN AS THEY ARE KNOWN PHONETICALLY) HAVE MOVED INTO PROVINCE THREE BATTALIONS OF THEIR ELITE RESERVE TROOPS, SOME OF WHOM HAVE BEEN FIGHTING FOR UP TO 20 YEARS. IT IS THESE TROOPS WHO WILL BE SHOULDERING GREATER RESPONSIBILITY ON THE BATTLEFIELD AS THE AMERICANS WITHDRAW. THEIR AMERICAN ADVISERS SAY THEY ARE AS GOOD AS ANY SOLDIER.

DESPITE THE REGION'S VIOLENT REPUTATION, IT IS NOT ALL FIERCE FIGHTING FOR THE ARVN TROOPS. INSTEAD IT IS MORE A MATTER OF PATROLS - TRAMPING THROUGH PADDY FIELDS, SNEAKING THROUGH JUNGLE BLISTERED BY B-52 BOMBERS AND CROSSING STREAMS - USUALLY UNDER A FIERCE SUN AND SOMETIMES IN A MONSOONAL DOWNPOUR. NINE DAYS OUT OF TEN GO BY WITH LITTLE OR NO INCIDENT.

THE MOST DANGEROUS MOMENT FOR THE ARVN IN EMERGING FROM JUNGLES AND CROSSING OPEN LAND. HERE THEY MUST AT THEIR MOST ALERT. IN THIS SWEEP, THE MONOTONY WAS BROKEN BY THE CAPTURE OF A NORTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIER WOUNDED IN ACTION THREE DAYS EARLIER AND ABANDONED. HE WAS INTERROGATED ON THE SPOT BY THE FIELD OFFICER IN CHARGE, MAJOR TUNG (PRONOUNCED TOONG), GIVEN A SHIRT AND IDENTIFIED WITH A TAG. A HELICOPTER WAS CALLED IN TO EVACUATE HIM, GUIDED TO THE SPOT BY A SMOKE MARKER. THE CAPTURED SOLDIER WAS NOT TOO HAPPY ABOUT THE RIDE; E HAD HEARD TALES OF COMMUNIST PRISONERS BEING THROWN OUT OF HELICOPTERS.

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE MARINES THEN RESUMED THEIR SWEEP BEFORE RENDEZVOUS-ING WITH RIVER LANDING CRAFT WHICH FERRIED THEM BACK TO THEIR BASE.
