  • Description

MODERN TECHNIQUES OF EXPLORATION HAVE REVEALED A NEW SOURCE OF HIGH-GRADE COPPER ORE IN ZAMBIA, MORE THAT 200 MILES (322 KMS) FROM THE COUNTRY'S COPPER BELT. WORK HAS BEGUN ON THE NEW-FOUND DEPOSIT, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO YIELD SOME 600,000 TONS OF COPPER DURING THE NEXT SIX-YEAR PERIOD.

THE NEW COPPER STRIKE LIES 200 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF THE COPPER BELT AND EXPERTS SAY IT IS ONE THE RICHEST DEPOSITS IN THE COUNTRY. THE ORE WILL BE MINED BY THE OPEN PIT METHOD AND TAKEN TO THE COPPER BELT FOR PROCESSING. BUT IT IS SO RICH THAT IT WILL BE STRAIGHT INTO THE SMELTERS WITHOUT FIRST BEING CONCENTRATED.

EXPERTS HAVE BEEN WORKING IN THE AREA FOR SOME MONTHS, COMING INTO THE AREA BY HELICOPTER AND LAND-ROVER TO SAMPLE THE ORE EXTRACTED FROM THE EARTH AND TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF THE SEAM.

WHEN FULLY OPERATIONAL, THE NEW MINE WILL PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR SOME 150 LOCAL PEOPLE.

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS THAT A SIGNIFICANT COPPER STRIKE HAS BEEN MADE OUTSIDE ZAMBIA'S VAST COPPER BELT.
