  • Description

Amateur and professional dancers of 15 nations met again at Hammersmith, London, May 2, for the second round of the two-day World Ballroom Dancing Championships.

In the amateur Latin-American finals, winners were Karl and Ursula Breuer (No. 83) of Germany; followed by Derek and Sheila Hillyard (No. 91) of Britain; Juergen and Helga Bernhold (No. 84) of Germany; and Josef and Rosemarie Jakob (No. 76) of Austria.

The professionals completed the modern section, with Harry Smith-Hampshire and Doreen Casey (No. 18) of Britain winning before Bob Burgess and Doreen Freeman (No. 19) of Britain; Wim Voeten and Jeanne Assmann (No. 13) of Holland; and Kevin Gibson and Shirley Saunderson (No. 1) of Australia.

One of the evening's highlights - a "test" match between four-couple teams representing England and Australia. The Australians entered with a kangaroo mascot, while the England captain carried a lion mascot. It was the third contest of this kind between the two countries - the dances being Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and Quickstep - and though Australia lost by 57 points against England's 92, their dancing drew much applause from the audience.

Overall amateur world champions were Anthony Hurley and Fay Saxton (No. 69) of Britain, who married and became British champions last year, Second place went to Karl and Ursula Breuer (No. 59), of Germany, who received the 1960 world amateur title. Another German couple, Jurgen and Helga Bernhold (No. 60), came third.

A well-deserved world professional title fell to another husband-and-wife partnership - Harry Smith-Hampshire and Doreen Casey (No. 18) of Britain. They have won the British title twice, the International three times, and the European championship for a record-breaking five years. The Duchess of Bedford was there to present the prizes.
