SYNOPSIS: Football--and Scotland's Celtic, playing in the hooped shirts from right to left, were knocked out of the European Cup on Wednesday night (March 24) when they played Holland's Ajax Amsterdam at Glasgow's Hampden Park. For despite their one-nil victory over Ajax, their goal aggregate was not enough for them to stay in the competition. Celtic won the Cup in 1967, and reached the final last season.
They started their second leg of the quarter final against Ajax three goals down, and threw everything into attack. But they never really had a chance to overcome this huge first leg deficit from two weeks ago against a defence superbly marshalled by Ajax Captain Vasovic, despite brilliant efforts by Jimmy Johnstone on the right wing who scored the only goal of the match in the twenty-seventh minute.
Ajax took up the attack late in the first half after pressure from Celtic, when they refused to be rushed into mistakes. It was very close to a goal for Ajax several times, but superb play by Celtic goalkeeper Williams saved his team from total defeat.
It was a brave try by Celtic--but Ajax pressure was too high, and they met their match. Even in European Cup defeat, however, it must have been some consolation to win the match--a win thoroughly deserved by the effort they put into the game.
