Enormous crowds thronged the Francorchamps circuit July 3 to watch races for the Belgian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Twenty-two riders from seven countries contested the international side-car event for 500 c.c. machines. F. Camathias of Switzerland took a first lap lead, closely followed by Helmut Fath of West Germany. He held this lead until the last of the eight laps, when his machine developed a fault and he was forced to retire. Fath was the eventual winner with a time of 41 minutes 57 seconds, but some consolation came to Camathias later when it was announced that he had set up a new lap record.

Carlo Ubbiali of Italy, riding an M.V, won the international 250 c.c solo event. A duel between Ubbiali and Gary Hocking of Rhodesia, was an exciting feature of this 12-nation race. Spectators were thrilled as these two brilliant riders jockeyed for the lead. First and second positions were changed continuously, but Ubbiali was just out in front when the chequered flag came down for the finish. His time was 41 minutes 40 seconds.

The day's main event - the 500 c.c. solo - was won by Britain's John Surtees on an Italian M.V. machine. He recorded an average speed of 120.52 m.p.h.
