  • Description

Hannu Mikkola, the "Flying Finn" and his Swedish co-driver Gunnar Palm were the first to finish in the 3,750-mile (6,000 km) East Africa Safari car rally on Sunday (April 2), according to provisional results published in Dar as Salaam -- the starting and finishing point.

Driving a Ford Escort, the Scandinavian team were the first overseas drivers ever to win the rally -- described as the most rigorous test of men and machines in international motoring -- in its 20-year history. Mikkola, making his second attempt, said he had driven all but 15 miles (24 kms) of the route.

The Finnish-Swedish team had a 19-minute points advantage over the Porsche of Polish driver Sobieslav Zasada and Mikkola held the lead for nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 kms). But the drivers must now submit their cars to rigorous scrutineering before the official placings are announced.

SYNOPSIS: The East African Safari... probably the toughest rally in international motoring. Hannu Mikkola, the "Flying Finn", holds his lead.

And Edgar Hermann of Kenya -- in car number ten -- wasn't far behind... trying for his third successive win. But Mikkola went on to finish first. Poland's Sobieslav Zasada in a Porsche -- car number 12 -- finished second on provisional points.

Only 20 of the eighty-five starters completed the route... nearly four-thousand miles of bush and mountain, mud and dust through Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Here, in the Taita Hills near Mombasa, the drivers are entering the final stages of the rally. This year, overseas drivers won the event for the first time.
