Background: Addis Ababa is the site of a current ten-day conference on Hydrology and Hydrometeorology for African Development. The conference is a joint effort of the World Health Organisation, the Food and Agricultural Organisation, the Economic Commission for Africa, and UNESCO. It is being sponsored by the Organisation for African unity. The purpose of the conference is the study of the improvement of Africa's water resources. The delegates from 40 African nations and three European nations plan to explore the means to develop and utilize water resources through science, technology and human skills. The organisers hope that the conference will offer appropriate advice and give adequate guidelines to enable African countries to achieve, sustain and improve on the required development of their water resource services as a means for economic development.
