  • Description

ENGLAND TODAY (SATURDAY) BOOSTED ITS CHANCES TO WIN THE WORLD SOCCER CUP THIS SUMMER BY DEFEATING OLD RIVALS SCOTLAND BY FOUR GOALS TO THREE IN GLASGOW.

MORE THAN 130-THOUSAND PEOPLE TURNED OUT FOR THE GAME. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1958 THAT ENGLAND HAD BEATEN THE SCOTS TEAM ON THEIR HOME GROUND. THE ENGLISHMEN TOOK THE LEAD EARLY IN THE FIRST HALF WHEN FORWARD GEOFF HURST SCORED AFTER EIGHTEEN MINUTES. THEN HE PUT OVER A CROSS SHOT TO ALLOW INSIDE-RIGHT ROGER HUNT TO SCORE THE SECOND GOAL FOR ENGLAND IN THE FIRST 34 MINUTES.

SCOTLAND HAD MADE A POOR SHOW, AND IT LOOKED LIKE A HEAVY DEFEAT. BUT, ONLY FOUR MINUTES SHORT OF THE HALF TIME WHISTLE, SCOTLAND INSIDE-RIGHT DENIS LAW HEADED THE BALL INTO THE NET TO GAIN A GOAL THAT SET THE SCENE FOR A TOUGH SECOND HALF BATTLE.

THE NEXT GOAL FOR ENGLAND CAME ONLY THREE MINUTES AFTER THE INTERVAL, WHEN RIGHT-WINGER ALAN BALL PASSED TO GIVE HUNT A SCORE. BUT SOON AFTER IT WAS LAW AGAIN, WHEN HE SLIPPED A PERFECT PASS TO OUTSIDE-RIGHT JOHNSTONE, WHO SCORED SCOTLAND'S SECOND.

IT WAS ONLY 17 MINUTES SHORT OF THE FINAL WHISTLE WHEN ENGLAND'S BOBBY CHARLTON MADE THE FOURTH GOAL FOR HIS TEAM WITH A POWERFUL LONG-RANGE SHOT. BUT SCOTLAND STILL HAD AN ANSWER -- JOHNSTONE WAS THERE WITH A GOAL A MERE EIGHT MINUTES FROM THE END OF THE GAME, TO GIVE THE FINAL RESULT OF 4-3 IN ENGLAND'S FAVOUR.
