    BRITISH AND GERMAN WARSHIPS MET IN THE NORTH SEA TODAY AS ALLIES TO COMMEMORATE THE GREAT FIRST WORLD WAR NAVAL BATTLE OFF JUTLAND. THERE WERE ALSO CEREMONIES IN WEST GERMANY AND IN LONDON.

    THE COMMEMORATION BEGAN IN THE WEST GERMAN NAVAL GARP SON TOWN OF WILHEMSHAVEN, WHERE GERMAN NAVAL OFFICERS MADE SPEECHES AND LAID WREATHS. THERE WAS A SIMILAR CEREMONY AT ST. MARTIN'S CHURCH IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE IN LONDON. THE BRITISH MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MR HEALEY, WAS THERE FOR THE WREATH LAYING. SO WAS LORD BEATTY, SON OF THE ADMIRAL WHO LED THE BRITISH FLEET AT JUTLAND. AND THERE WAS A GROUP OF GERMAN NAVAL RATINGS AMONG THE BRITISH OFFICERS AND SAILORS.

    THE CEREMONY AT SEA BEGAN WHEN A GERMAN SHIP FIRED A WARNING SHOT, THEN WREATHS WERE THROWN INTO THE WATER. BOTH SIDES CLAIMED VICTORY AFTER THE ENGAGEMENT IN 1916, WHICH COST THE LIVES OF ALMOST 9,000 BRITONS AND GERMANS.

    SYNOPSIS: BRITISH AND WEST GERMAN WARSHIPS KEPT A PEACEFUL RENDEZVOUS INT HE NORTH SEA TODAY (TUESDAY) TO MARK THE FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GREAT NAVAL BATTLE OFF JUTLAND. A GERMAN SHIP STARTED THE CEREMONY WITH A WARNING SHOT, THEN WREATHS WERE THROWN INTO THE SEA.

    IN THE WEST GERMAN NAVAL GARRISON TOWN OF WILHELMSHAVEN THERE WERE MORE COMMEMORATION CEREMONIES GERMAN OFFICERS MADE SPEECHES AND LAID WREATHS TO THE 2,400 GERMAN SAILORS KILLED IN THE 1916 ENGAGEMENT. THE GERMAN NAVY ALSO LOST ELEVEN SHIPS IN THE BATTLE, WHICH LASTED FOR TWELVE HOURS.

    AT ST. MARTIN'S CHURCH IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LORD BEATTY, THE SON OF THE ADMIRAL WHO LED THE BRITISH FLEET AT JUTLAND, AND THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE, MR. HEALEY, ATTENDED ANOTHER WREATH LAYING CEREMONY.

    THERE WAS A GROUP OF GERMAN NAVAL RATINGS AMONG THE BRITISH OFFICERS AND SAILORS AT THE TRAFALGAR SQUARE COMMEMORATION. BRITAIN LOST 6,500 MEN AND FOURTEEN SHIPS AT JUTLAND. AFTER THE BATTLE, BOTH SIDES CLAIMED VICTORY.
