  • Description

US President Lyndon Johnson welcomed Mexican President Gustave Diaz Ordaz to the White House Thursday (October 26) and declared that Mexican-Unite States relations "are closer today that they have ever been in the history of our two republics". President Diaz Ordaz responded by expressing hopes that their talks would result in "ever more solidarity between our two countries.

The Mexican chief executive, the first from his country to make an official visit to the United States since 1959, was accorded full military honors at a colorful arrival ceremony on the South grounds of the White House. President Johnson, who has met with President Diaz Ordaz five times outside Washington, said he welcomed his visitor as his own friend and a friend of the people. The Mexican President, his wife and three children listened to Mr. Johnson say, "I want you to feel at home in my house, as I do in yours," and concluded in faltering Spanish, "Esta en su casa," indicating the White House.

Mr. Gustave Diaz Ordaz journeyed to Washington to confer with Mr. Johnson on the future of the Alliance of Progress in Latin America, moves towards establishing a "common market" in Latin America, and to explore ways to improve the economic condition on both sides of the Rio Grande. (Both the United States and Mexico border the Rio Grande.)
On Saturday October 28, both men will fly to El Paso, Texas, where they will take part in an historic ceremony in which the United States will hand over to Mexico a splinter of land called EL CHAMIZAL - a southern suburb of El Paso, Texas.
