  • Description

CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG, MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA FOR TWO MONTHS, ON FRIDAY MET AND HAD TALKS WITH EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE OF ETHIOPIA -- AND ENDED RENEWED SPECULATION ABOUT HIS HEALTH. VISNEWS CAMERAMAN TAFESSA JARRA WAS THERE AND BROUGHT BACK SOME REMARKABLE AND EXCLUSIVE COLOUR FOOTAGE OF THE CHINESE LEADER WITH HIS ETHIOPIAN GUEST, THE FIRST EMPEROR TO VISIT THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC.

PRIME MINISTER CHOU-EN-LAI WAS ALSO AT THE MEETING. THE OUTCOME WAS SEEN THE FOLLOWING DAY WHEN THE TWO COUNTRIES SIGNED IMPORTANT TRADE AND ECONOMIC AID AGREEMENT.

CAMERAMAN JARRA ALSO FILMED THE ETHIOPIAN EMPEROR WHEN HE TOURED PEKING'S TSUNGHUA UNIVERSITY AND VISITED THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA. HIS EARLIER COVERAGE OF THE VISIT, PRODUCTION NO. 11912/71 ETHIOPIA'S HAILE SELASSIE GIVEN TUMULTUOUS WELCOME IN PEKING, WAS SERVICED ON OCTOBER 9TH.

SYNOPSIS: IN PEKING'S GREAT HALL OF THE PEOPLE, CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG ON FRIDAY APPEARED IN PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE AUGUST 7TH. HE WAS GREETING ETHIOPIA'S EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE -- THE FIRST EMPEROR EVER TO VISIT THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

LOOKING FIT AND WELL -- AND DISPELLING PAST RUMOURS ABOUT HIS HEALTH -- THE SEVENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD CHINESE LEADER CHATTED WITH HIS SEVENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD ETHIOPIAN GUEST THROUGH AN INTERPRETER. THEN THEY POSED FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH CHINESE PRIME MINISTER CHOU-EN-LAI. SPECULATION-ABOUT CHAIRMAN MAO'S HEALTH STARTED IN THE WEST FOLLOWING THE CANCELLATION OF THE CUSTOMARY NATIONAL DAY PARADE IN PEKING ON OCTOBER 1ST.

AFTER GIVING THE CAMERAMEN AMPLE OPPORTUNITY TO DISPELL THAT RECENT SPECULATION, CHAIRMAN MAO REPORTEDLY SUGGESTED TO HIS GUEST THAT THEY SHOULD "LIBERATE" THEMSELVES FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHERS AND HAVE A PRIVATE TALK IN THE GREAT HALL'S PEKING ROOM. THE TWO LEADERS -- BOTH OF WHOM LED THEIR PEOPLE DURING THE 1930'S IN STRUGGLES AGAINST FOREIGN INVADERS -- CONTINUED THEIR DISCUSSIONS FOR AN HOUR AND FORTY MINUTES.

THE PREVIOUS DAY, EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN AN INITIAL ROUND OF TALKS WITH PRIME MINISTER CHOU. THE OUT-COME OF THESE DISCUSSIONS WAS TO BE MADE KNOWN AT THE WEEKEND, WHEN IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE TWO COUNTRIES HAD SIGNED IMPORTANT TRADE AND ECONOMIC AGREEMENT, WHICH REPORTEDLY INCLUDE A LARGE LONG-TERM LOAN TO ETHIOPIA TO BE USED FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT. BOTH LEADERS SAID THE AGREEMENT WOULD CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO STRENGTHENING FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THEIR COUNTRIES. AND THE EMPEROR DECLARED THAT HIS TALKS WITH PREMIER CHOU AND CHAIRMAN MAO HAD GIVEN HIM GREAT PERSONAL SATISFACTION.

THROUGHOUT THE SIX-DAY VISIT, THE EMPEROR HAS BEEN RECEIVED WITH GREAT WARMTH BY THE CHINESE PEOPLE. HERE, HE WAS VISITING PEKING'S TSUNGHUA UNIVERSITY. SINCE ITS FOUNDATION IN 1911, THE UNIVERSITY HAS COME TO SPECIALISE IN THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. THE EMPEROR WAS TO VISIT ITS MACHINE SHOP AND COMPUTER LABORATORY. THERE ARE CURRENTLY THIRTY-SEVEN THOUSAND STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY, TAUGHT BY A STAFF OF EIGHT THOUSAND. CONTINUING TO SEE SOMETHING OF CHINESE TECHNOLOGICAL INVESTMENT, THE EMPEROR VISITED INDUSTRIAL CONCERNS IN AND AROUND PEKING AND TALKED TO WORKERS.

FROM THE TECHNOLOGICAL PRESENT TO THE IMPERIAL PAST -- AND ONE OF THE GREATEST BUILDING ENTERPRISES EVER UNDERTAKEN BY MAN, THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA. THE EMPEROR WAS TO COMPLETE HIS CHINESE VISIT WITH TRIPS TO SHANGHAI AND CANTON -- AGAIN ACCOMPANIED BY PREMIER CHOU FOR FURTHER TALKS -- BEFORE FLYING TO IRAN TO ATTEND THAT COUNTRY'S TWO-THOUSAND FIVE-HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS. THE ETHIOPIAN LEADER PRAISED THE SUPPORT GIVEN BY THE CHINESE TO THE AFRICAN STRUGGLE AGAINST COLONIALISM.
