    INTRODUCTION: Major Reid-Daly, the Commanding Officer of the Selous in Rhodesia, has said it is "totally untrue" that his men were responsible for the deaths of missionaries.

    The Charges was made by Mr. Robert Mugabe, one of the leaders of the African nationalist Patriotic Front, after the killing of two priests, a lay brother and four nuns at St. Paul's Roman Catholic mission, Musami, early last month. T he Rhodesian police laid the blame on members of the Zimbabwe African National Union, which is under Mr. Mugabe's control. But Mr. Mugabe said that on the contrary, the Rhodesian Army was responsible, and he believed the killings had been carried out by the Selous Scouts.

    SYNOPSIS: The Selous Scouts are an elite fighting unit of the Rhodesian Army, and include both black and white troopers. Their main function is the gathering of intelligence in forward military areas.

    They are a mounted unit, and train at Inkomo Barracks, near Salisbury. The Scouts are named after a famous British explorer and hunter Frederick Courteney Selous, who made pioneering journeys in south-central African when it was being opened to the outside world in the late nineteenth century. His travels added substantially to the knowledge of what later became Rhodesia. It is not the first time the Scouts have been accused of murder by the nationalist. They were also blamed for the deaths of three missionaries in an ambush near Bulawayo last December. The Rhodesian government said guerrillas were responsible for this incident.
