  • Description

THERE WERE FURTHER TURKISH DEMONSTRATIONS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN CYPRUS, AS WELL AS IN TURKEY, AGAINST PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS, THE UNITED NATIONS, AND THE UNITED STATES.

THEY FOLLOW YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATION IN ANKARA, WHEN ABOUT TWENTY-THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED TO THE CABINET BUILDING AFTER A MEETING AT THE ATATURK STATUE.

THE RALLY WAS UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE TURKISH NATIONAL FEDERATION OF STUDENTS.

THE MARCH DOWN THE MAIN BOULEVARD OF ANKARA CAME AFTER THE CROWD HAD LISTENED TO MILITANT SPEECHES AT THE ATATURK STATUE ON THE CYPRUS SITUATION.

THE DEMONSTRATORS CARRIED PLACARDS, MOST OF THEM ANTI-AMERICAN, BUT SOME ALSO ANTI-RUSSIAN.

AS THE VAST CROWD MOVED DOWN THE BOULEVARD FESTOONED WITH FLAGS AND BANNERS, THE DEMONSTRATORS CHANTED "THE ARMY TO CYPRUS!" MEMBERS OF THE POLICE FORCE AND ARMY WATCHED, BUT DID NOT INTERVENE.

(THE DEMONSTRATION ENDED WITH THE BURNING OF AN EFFIGY OF PRESIDENT MAKARIOS.)
