  • Description

TWO PEOPLE DIED AND FOUR THOUSAND HOMES WERE DESTROYED IN A FIRE WHICH DEVASTATED THE SLUM AREA SOUTH OF SAIGON ON 20TH MARCH. THE FIRE BROKE OUT DURING THE EVENING, AND WAS NOT BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL UNTIL TEN HOURS LATER.

HIGH WINDS FANNED THE FLAMES, PREVENTING EFFECTIVE FIRE CONTROL; THE SITUATION WAS MADE WORSE BY THE FACT THAT VIETNAM IS IN THE MIDDLE OF ITS DRY SPELL. WHEN THE FIRE WAS PUT OUT, 30,000 HOMELESS RETURNED TO THE REMAINS OF THEIR HOUSES TO RESCUE ANY PERSONAL BELONGINGS WHICH HAD SURVIVED THE FLAMES.

SOUTH VIETNAM TROOPS WERE CALLED IN TO HELP RESCUE OPERATIONS, WHILE AMERICAN MILITARY TEAMS ATTENDED TO THE INJURED NUMBERING MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED. THIS IS THE WORST FIRE SAIGON HAS HAD SINCE 1955. IT HAS ADDED TO THE SEVERE HOUSING SHORTAGE CAUSED BY PEASANTS FLOODING INTO THE CITY TO ESCAPE FROM THE GUERILLA WARFARE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE.
