  • Description

Civilians and troops on the off-shore island of Quemoy are using the respite offered by the Communist alternate days' bombardment to build up the defences of the island. While the troops repair and set-up military emplacements, the civilians build shelters for their own protection.

A common sight during the "no-bombardment" days is rock-breaking. Armed with small hammers the civilians sit in groups smashing large pieces or rock. The chips are then carried away in baskets to the sites where they are mixed with cement for the shelters and dug-outs.
