Sport--Soccer, and in the second leg of the European Cup second round, Ajax Amsterdam travelled to Cyprus to face Omonia, Nicosia. With them, they took a ten-nil advantage from the first leg. But before a crowd of home team supporters in Nicosia, the Dutch team found it much harder going.
SYNOPSIS: Right from the start, Omonia went on the attack. This move broke down, but at the other end Ajax did not look so sharp either. It was not to be their night--even the referee seemed unhelpful, and as Omonia swept upfield, the ball ran loose to Tsikkos, who scored spectacularly.
Although unlikely to pull back ten goals, Omonia showed no sign of giving up, either on attack or defence. Cheered on by their home crowd, they kept looking for goals, and in the fifteenth minute were rewarded again. This time Philippos netted from close range.
Beginning their moves deep in defence, Omonia were beginning to tear the Dutch team apart. Lazy marking left centra forward Kaiafas alone in the box, and he made it three-nil just before half-time.
In the second half, Ajax got back into the game. Bonsink just failed to hit his volley right, and at the other end Omania were not as efficient as int eh first half. However, Kaiafas made it four-nil just before the end, and Omonia keeper Praxitelous did his bit, too. Ajax still went through to the quarter-finals on aggregate.
