  • Description

THE NEW ZEALAND ALL BLACKS BEAT WALES 13-6 IN THEIR INTERNATIONAL RUGBY MATCH BEFORE A CAPACITY CROWD AT CARDIFF ARMS PARK, CARDIFF TODAY. THE ALL BLACKS HAD COMMAND FOR MOST OF THE MATCH BUT THE RUGGED WELSH FORWARD GAVE THE VISITORS A TORRID 80 MINUTES.

THE START OF THE GAME SAW THE WELSHMEN IN ATTACK. BUT THEY MISSED SCORING OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDING AN EASY ATTEMPT AT A PENALTY GOAL. THE ALL BLACKS STARTED TO APPLY RELENTLESS PRESSURE IN THE LOOSE PLAY AND WERE REWARDED AFTER 23 MINUTES WITH A PENALTY GOAL BY FULL-BACK, MCCORMICK, TO MAKE IT 3-0. THEN WINGER BIRTWISTLE SCORED A TRY IN THE CORNER AFTER A SET PIECE MOVEMENT AND MCCORMICK MADE A LOVELY CONVERSION.

THE SCORE WAS 9 8-0 TO THE ALL BLACKS AT HALF-TIME BUT THEY HAD TO FACE A STIFF BREEZE IN THE SECOND PERIOD. RIGHT FROM THE WHISTLE, THE WELSHMEN WERE IN ATTACK AND ONLY ATROCIOUS LUCK STOPPED THEM FROM SCORING. WINGER JONES LOST THE BALL OVER THE LINE AND EAST PENALTY KICKS WERE MISSED. FINALLY, WELSH 5/8 BARRY JOHN - HE WAS THE BEST PLAYER ON THE FIELD - KICKED A FIELD GOAL TO MAKE IT 8-3. THE ALL BLACKS REPLIED WITH A PENALTY GOAL TO MAKE THE FINAL SCORE 13-6.

CRITICS WERE UNANIMOUS IN THEIR PRAISE FOR THE WELSH FORWARDS, WHO GAVE THE ALL BLACKS PACK A THOROUGH TESTING.
