The Middle East peace negotiations took a step further on Wednesday (19 March) when the Israeli Cabinet considered new Egyptian peace proposals taken to it by the American Secretary of State, Doctor Henry Kissinger.

To Cabinet met in Jerusalem in a special session which was to last ten and a half hours. The outcome of the meeting was not divulged immediately.

It was called to consider the Egyptian counter offer to Israel's proposed terms for a new interim agreement.

The basic problem was believed to be Egypt's refusal to give assurances of non-belligerency which Israel is demanding in return for troop withdrawals.

Doctor Kissinger expressed optimism after a 90 minute talk with the Israeli leader, Mr. Rabin, just before the Cabinet meeting. He said the talks were going very well.

The Israeli press however expressed strong doubts about Doctor Kissinger's chances of masterminding on accord.

During the long Cabinet meeting, Doctor Kissinger took the opportunity to fly to Riyadh to pay a courtesy call on King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.
