  • Description

European Farm Union leaders on Wednesday (4 September) called an international farmers' demonstration in the nine countries of the Common Market for 16 September to press for higher agricultural prices.

The date set for the demonstrations is the eve of the next meeting of the E.E.C. Agriculture Minister, who failed in Brussels on Tuesday (3 September) to agree on new farm price levels.

The call for the Common Market demonstration came form a conference of Farm Inion leaders, organised by M. Michel Debatisse, head of the French Farmers' Association.

The farmers are angry that although the E.C.G. Ministers recognised the worsening economic plight of the community's 10 million farmers, squeezed between falling prices and soaring costs, they put off action for two weeks.

The Ministers did say, however, that at their next session they would take concrete measures to boost farm incomes.

The Farm Union leaders want at least an eight per cent price rise.
