  • Description

Tony Mundine of Australia retained his Commonwealth light-heavyweight boxing title by defeating the London-based Ghanaian, Victor Attivor, in Accra on Sunday (5 September).

SYNOPSIS: Mundine and Attivor had met once before, in Sydney, last December. In that bout, Mundine knocked out Attivor in the second round. The challenger started this fight in aggressive fashion, shaking Mundine with a two-fisted attack in the opening round. The champion responded with a barrage of blows in the second round which sent Attivor to the canvas. The Ghanaian came back in the third round to open a cut under Mundine's left eyebrow. It was Mundine's 61st professional fight while Attivor had only ten previous professional fights.

A crowd of about 15 thousand turned out to watch Attivor in this his first fight in his home town. But after his early promise the challenger received many heavy punches from Mundine.

Attivor was saved by the bell after walking into another battering at the end of the seventh round, and in the next round the Australian brought blood seeping from the Ghanaian's mouth as he continued his attack.

Attivor was floored again at the start of the ninth round when Mundine scored with a right uppercut. The challenger rallied bravely, but he was no match for Mundine and further heavy punching from the champion put Attivor on the canvas again. Referee Roy Ankrah of Ghana then stepped in and awarded the fight to Mundine to save Attivor from further punishment.
