  • Description

Prime Minister Macmillan was enthusiastically cheered when he arrived - with Lady Dorothy Macmillan - at Bromley town hall, October 9, to hear the election result of the constituency announced. He was returned as Bromley's M.P. with his large majority increased by over 2,000.

For the first time, television has played an outstandingly important part in a General Election - party leaders have appealed to the public on television screens throughout the country, and those who in earlier elections read their pre-election news only in newspapers supporting their own party have seen a much wider news coverage on television. As the vital result from Bromley - constituency of the Conservatives' mainstay, Mr. Macmillan, - was awaited, a large television audience waited round their screens to see the announcement read out.

Speaking at Bromley after the announcement, Mr. Macmillan (S.O.F.) thanked voters for the loyalty, support and confidence they had placed in him, and hoped he would be able to deserve that confidence in the years ahead.

He said the election battle in the constituency had been straightforward and fair. "We hope and pray that we can look forward to the next period as one of prosperity for all our people - we are one people, whatever party or creed - and that we may be at the opening of a new period of peace for the world", he added.
