Background: Supreme Commander Allied Forces in Europe, General Norstad, arrived at Copenhagen Airport, Jan 28, with his wife and four staff officers, for talks with the Danish Government. He was met by Thorkil Christensen, former Danish Foreign Minister and chairman of the Danish Foreign Policy Society, which Norstad addressed in closed session that evening. The Danish Defense Chief, Admiral Qvistgaard, was also in the welcoming party.
During his visit to Denmark, General Norstad will confer with the Danish Premier, Paul Hansen, on the Government's decision to cut National Service -- Service conscription - from eighteen months to one year. Recently, the Supreme Commander stated that he considered twelve months service was unsatisfactory in any NATO country. Observes also believe that the Danish Prime Minister will inform General Norstad of his talks with Mr. Mikoyan, the USSR Deputy Premier, held recently when the Russian leader was returning form his USA tour.
