  • Description

In Buenos Aires on Tuesday (22 May) President-Elect Dr. Hector Campora met whit leaders of almost all the country's political parties including opposition conservatives and socialists. Dr. Campora is reported to have won their agreement for a period of "social and political truce" during at least the early days of his administration.

Outside the suburban restaurant "Nino's",a popular Peronist meeting place where the meeting was held, there were clashes between rival groups of supporters, representing the extreme left wing of the Peronist Justicialist Party and the moderate sectors. Police said that at least nine people were injured in the fighting.

Among the leaders meeting with Dr. Campora were two of his rivals from last month's Presidential elections. They were Oscar Alende who, representing the Popular Alliance, gained 11 per cent of the vote, and Ricardo Balbin the Radical Civil Union candidate who was runner up to Campora, gaining 23 per cent of the popular vote.

Dr. Campora is due to be sworn-in as President on Friday, signifying a return to civilian government after nine years of military rule.
