  • Description

TWELVE MEN ACCOMPANIED BY THEIR DOGS WENT UP THE UNTERSBERG, NEAR SALZBURG, AUSTRIA, MAR 17 TO PRACTISE AVALANCHE CATASTROPHE EXERCISES. THE DOGS, AGED BETWEEN TWO AND NINE YEARS, BELONG TO POLICEMEN, CUSTOMS OFFICIALS OR ARE PRIVATELY OWNED. A DOG MUST COMPLETE TWO TRAINING COURSES OF 14 DAYS EACH BEFORE BEING GIVEN THE TITLE "AVALANCHE DOG".

THEN HE HAS TO MAKE AT LEAST FIVE EXERCISES A YEAR - LIKE THIS ONE-TO KEEP HIS TITLE. WITH THEM ON THE MOUNTAIN, HOWEVER, WERE SOLDIERS OF THE AUSTRIAN BUNDESHEER. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT THEY CAN GO TO THE AID OF COMPLETE STRANGERS. THE SOLDIERS DUG HOLES IN THE SNOW AND BURIED THEMSELVES.

THE DOGS WERE THEN LET LOOSE - AND STARTED SEARCHING FOR THE MEN. SOME OF THE SOLDIERS HAD BEEN UNDER TWO OR THREE METRES OF SNOW, WITH A SUITABLE VENTILATION SHAFT, FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR. THIS EXERCISE ALWAYS TAKES PLACE ON DIFFERENT MOUNTAINS: THE UNTERSBERG IS BETWEEN AUSTRIA AND GERMANY.
