    EDUCATION MINISTERS FROM FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICAN STATES ARE MEETING IN ABIDJAN FOR A CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF SCHOOL EDUCATION. THE CONFERENCE WAS OPENED ON THURSDAY BY IVORY COAST PRESIDENT FELIX HOUPHOUET BOIGNY. IT ENDS NEXT WEDNESDAY.

    IN HIS OPENING SPEECH, PRESIDENT HOUPHOUET BOIGNY SAID IT WAS ESSENTIAL THAT, IF AFRICAN WAS TO CATCH UP WITH MORE ADVANCED CONTINENTS, ITS CHILDREN SHOULD BE PREPARED BY THEIR EDUCATION TO ACCOMPLISH GREAT THINGS.

    HE ALSO SAID THAT AFRICA'S SHARE OF THE WORLD'S WEALTH WAS DIMINISHING. THE EDUCATION AIM OF AFRICA SHOULD BE TO MAKE SCHOOL ONE OF THE ESSENTIAL FACTORS OF DEVELOPMENT.

    DELEGATES CAME FROM ALL FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICAN COUNTRIES EXCEPT GUINEA. FRANCE REPRESENTED BY M. JEAN CHARBONNEL, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS.
