The Angle-French supersonic airliner, Concorde 002, arrived in "tokyo on Monday (12 June) on its demonstration and sales tour. The arrival was marked by complaints from pollution-conscious Japanese. Newspapers headlined reports of excessive noise recorded by ground-level detectors, as the airliner flew in over Tokyo residential areas.

About 4,000 spectators were at Tokyo's Hanede Airport to watch as the sleek airliner came in for a landing, trailing two plumes of thick, black smoke.

The aircraft arrived in Tokyo 24-hours late, after engine and radar problems in Singapore. But it virtually halved the flight time by conventional jets from Manila, its previous stopping place.

Carrying the president of Japan Airlines (JAL)--which holds three options on the jet--Concorde made its first demonstration flight over Japan on tuesday (13 June). Watching Japan Transport Ministry officials said their conversation was drowned out by the howling jets as Concorde's engine after-burners ave it the extra boost for take-off.

SYNOPSIS: About four-thousand spectators were on hand to watch the sleek airliner come in for a landing. But newspapers headlined reports of excessive noise recorded by ground-level detectors as the needle-nosed aircraft flew in over residential areas. The British prototype arrived in Tokyo twenty-four hours late, after engine and radar problems in Singapore. But it virtually halved the flight time by conventional jets from Manila, its previous stopping place. Demonstration flights on Tuesday and Wednesday are aimed at converting three options held by Japan Airlines, J.A.L., into firm orders.

As Concorde made its landing approach, the metropolitan government reported a noise detector two kilometres from the runway registered one-hundred and five decibels, compared with ninety-five decibels for a jumbo jet. A spokesman said this was about the same level as recorded close to a construction site where a pile-driver was being operated. Newspapers carried reports of telephone conversations being drowned out as Concorde passed overhead.
