  • Description

Visnews filmed the 2nd day of the 4th Test Match, which started Jan 30 at Adelaide. It was the 96th Test Match played by England in Australia.

The game began with Statham and Trueman bowling for England to a close attacking field. Statham was soon being driven hard by McDonald and Burke in the same over. Their technique was effective and somewhat unusual. Burke feinted a shot at almost everything, which had the field running.

Tyson had his first ball after three quarters of an hour and was forthwith hooked for four by McDonald. At lunch Australia were 58 for none.

Australia scored steadily all afternoon. The running continued very good and May gradually changed his field to save as many runs as possible. Once Burke was nearly bowled by Statham, the ball going for a bye.

Shortly before 5 o'clock McDonald, was all but run out trying for a second run. He was 95 then and Burke was not to see him reach the target, being caught in the gully.

There England's success began and ended. The tightest phase of the day ensued, wherein McDonald was made to work nearly half an hour for his last two singles and Harvey just as long for his first.

Then Lock returned and two fours in his first over loosened the stranglehold. Right on 6 o'clock Harvey drove him for another to the boundary by the scoreboard beneath the cathedral.

Between the lunch and the close on the second day England took five wickets while Australia scored 135 runs.

McDonald's fine innings of 149 was interrupted at luncheon by a troublesome thigh muscle and during the afternoon Harvey, Favell and MacKay were out. These three wickets fell within 18 runs of each other, giving England the encouragement they needed.

Harvey, calling O'Neill for a second run, was beaten by the speed and agility of Statham running from mid-on. Bailey took Statham's return wide of the stumps but swung round in time to beat Harvey by a small margin. Favell, welcome as a local hero, was at once almost run out by a smart throw from Graveney in the covers and crashed Tyson confidently past mid-off before finding Statham too good for him.

A crowd of 35,000 watched. England bowled only 51 overs, extremely low number for a full day's cricket.
