Background: Crystal Palace, at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, had the better of the match in the English soccer First Division but could only draw one-all.

Palace were especially prominent in the first half, driven on by their all-action captain Steve Kember playing in mid-field. They came close to scoring a number of times.

Shortly after the start of the second half Palace went ahead, Birchenall scoring when a Kember shot was blocked.

Forest equalised quickly, through a defensive blunder by Palace's Blyth. Chasing back to cover, Blyth pushed a sloppy back-pass to his goalkeeper, and McKenzie took advantage of the chance to score.
