Background: This year's United States Open Tennis Championships at Forest Hills has been producing some shock results, but the biggest came on Monday (September 3rd). The defending champion and top seed, Billie-Jean King, was defeated by fellow-American, Julie Heldman, when she had to retire in the third set.
The match was played surprisingly on an outside court, and the players an spectators sweated it out in temperature around the hundred degree mark (37.8 Centigrade). Mrs. King early appeared to be in good form, but lost the first set 3-6. But after leading 1-4 in the second set, her game suddenly collapsed and she appeared listless and her stroke play lacked authority. Miss. Heldman took the second set 6-4.
In the third set, Miss. King lost two long service games. She was not running to the ball, and at one point Miss. Heldman walked to the net and asked her if she'd like to retire. Shortly afterwards, Mrs. King told the umpire she was retiring.
Her husband said later that she had been forced to quit because of the effects of penicillin injections she had for a heavy cold. Miss. Heldman new meets Helga Masthoff of West Germany in the Quarter Finals.
Another Quarter Final will be an All Australian affair between Kerry Melvilla and Yvonne Goolagong. Miss. Goolagong got through with a confident win against Jeanne Evert, Christine's fifteen year old sister. Miss. Goolagong won 6-2, 6-1.
