  • Description

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT TODAY (TUESDAY) BEGAN TALKS WITH TRADES UNION LEADERS IN A MOVE TO FORESTALL ANY POST-DEVALUATION TROUBLES WHICH MIGHT ARISE FROM AN EARLIER ATTACK BY THE COMMUNIST PARTY ON THE DEVALUATION OF THE FRANC. JEAN-LOUIS MOYNOT, CONFEDERATION SECRETARY OF FRANCE'S LARGEST UNION, THE GENERAL CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR (C.G.T.) AND M. GERMONT, JOINT GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE GENERAL UNION OF THE FEDERATION OF CIVIL SERVANTS (U.G.F.F.) WENT THIS AFTERNOON TO THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR FOR A MEETING WITH LABOUR MINISTER JOSEPH FONTANET.

ALL FRANCE'S UNIONS HAVE PLEDGED TO LOOK AFTER THE INTERESTS OF THE WORKERS FOLLOWING LAST FRIDAY'S 12 1/2 PER CENT DEVALUATION OF THE FRANC. THE COMMUNIST PARTY ATTACK CAME LATE LAST NIGHT WHEN THE PARTY POLITBURO SAID THE DEVALUATION REPRESENTED THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY AND CALLED FOR A STRUGGLE TO DEFEND THE WORKERS' PURCHASING POWER.

THE GOVERNMENT IS HOPING THAT THE LABOUR MINISTRY TALKS WITH THE UNION LEADERS WILL CONVINCE THEM THAT ALL EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE TO KEEP DOWN PRICES AND CONSUMER SPENDING AND THAT THE SUCCESS OF PRESIDENT POMPIDOU'S ECONOMIC PROGRAMME HEAVILY DEPENDS ON THE ATTITUDE OF THE UNIONS.
