  • Description

North Vietnamese forces in the Khmer Republic are still astride Highway Five, the so-called Rice Road, connecting the capital, Phnom Penh, with the food producing regions of the north.

Continued efforts to reopen the road since it was cut in early October have failed despite heavy attacks by the Khmer Republic Army.

The main fighting is now concentrated outside the village of Por Kong, some thirty miles (48 kilometres) north of Phnom Penh. Government troops are being supported by mortars and armoured vehicles against and enemy securely entrenched on either side of the road.

Casualties have been heavy on both sides, with the continued fighting driving hundreds of refugees from their homes to join the thousands already in the country's capital.
