With Spain's first elections in 40 years only days away, the major political parties have been holding spectacular rallies to strengthen support within their own following and capture new votes. 160 parties will be vying for the votes of the country's 23 million voters on June 15.

SYNOPSIS: At the vista Alegre bullring in Madrid on Friday (3 June) the red and gold monarchist flags were out in force for a big rally of the right-wing Popular Alliance. The alliance is a coalition of several rightist groups, making it one of the largest right-wing bodies. Party supporters left little doubt as to their allegiances.

This scuffle broke out at the back of the ring when a group disputed a speaker's praise of the work done by the Spanish police.

The party secretary-general is Manuel Fraga Iribarne, former Minister of Information under the Franco regime, and one of seen prominent figures of the Franco era. Iribarne was once considered by General Franco's more fanatical followers a dangerous liberal for allowing some measure of press freedom when he was minister, in the 1960's. Senor Fraga now calls himself a conservative and says the Popular Alliance -- which has been given a five per cent vote by public opinion polls -- should be in the style of the British Conservatives or the French Gaullists. The Alliance says it wants to preserve from the past what it considers good. The party is against demands by left-wing and feminist groups for divorce, contraception and legal abortion. It wants a continuation of the family-orientated tradition of the Franco regime.
