Windows of the court room where the trial is being held were bricked up, hundreds of police were called in to patrol the surrounding area and demonstrators paraded outside the courthouse as the trial opened.
The charges against Ulrike Meinhof concern arson, possession of weapons bank robberies and murder. The trial promises to be one of the most bizarre in German history.
The first trial......another for Andreas Baader and other members of the gang will follow.... has sparked demonstrations by communist groups outside the courthouse and the jail where the accused are being held. Banners and placards carried by the protestors accuse the authorities of "police terror" and call for an end to "isolated arrest."

West German police, who arrested both leaders some months ago, claim Meinhof wanted to everthrow the established order of the nation. Communist groups are staging a demonstration outside the prison where Meinhof is being held. They call for an end of what they claim is "police terror". They kept up a vigil throughout the night before the trial opened and then moved to the courthouse.
The trial of Ulrike Meinhof promises to be one of the most bizarre in West German history. She, along with other captured members of the anarchist group, is charged....among other things....with possession of fire arms, murder, and robbery.
