  • Description

QUEEN ELIZABETH AND PRINCE PHILIP SPENT THE FIRST DAY OF THEIR OFFICIAL STATE VISIT TO BRAZIL ON TUESDAY VISITING BRASILIA, THE ULTRA-MODERN NATIONAL CAPITAL PERCHED ON A PLATEAU 600 MILES (1,100 KMS) INLAND. PRESIDENT ARTHUR DA COSTA E SILVA AND HIS WIFE, MINISTER, DIPLOMATS AND MILITARY AND CIVILIAN CHIEFS WERE AT THE BRASILIA AIR BASE TO GREET THE ROYAL COUPLE IN BRILLIANT SUNSHINE WHEN THEY ARRIVED FROM RIO DE JANEIRO IN A ROYAL AIR FORCE VC-10 JET AIRCRAFT.

A 21-GUN SALUTE SOUNDED AS THE QUEEN STEPPED FROM HER PLANE IN BRASILIA. YOUNG PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE AIRPORT GAVE THE QUEEN A ROUSING CHEER. HOWEVER, WITH BRASILIA RELATIVELY SMALL POPULATION THERE WERE NO CONTINUOUS LINES OF PEOPLE ALONG THE ROUTE OF THE MOTORCADE FROM THE AIRPORT, SUCH AS HAVE GREETED THE QUEEN IN OTHER PARTS OF BRAZIL. HOWEVER, THE MOTORCADE PASSED ALONG MODERN HIGHWAYS WHICH GAVE THE QUEEN A MAGNIFICENT VIEW OF BRASILIA'S SOARING ARCHITECTURE.

THE BIGGEST CROWD, AND THE BIGGEST OVATION, WAS OUTSIDE THE GIANT HOTEL NACIONAL WHERE A SEVEN-ROOM ROYAL SUITE HAD BEEN PREPARED ON THE 9TH FLOOR. AS SHE STEPPED OUT OF HER CLOSED CAR, THERE WERE CHEERS AND APPLAUSE FROM A CROWD OF ABOUT 1,000 PEOPLE, INCLUDING A GROUP OF 100 CHILDREN WAVING BRITISH FLAGS. THE QUEEN, WEARING A WHITE COAST AND BROWN AND WHITE STRAW HAT, AND PRINCE PHILIP POSED WITH THEIR HOSTS, PRESIDENT COSTA E SILVA AND HIS WIFE, DONA YOLANDA, OUTSIDE THE HOTEL.

THEN THE ROYAL COUPLE TOOK THE LIFT UP TO THEIR SUITE AND A PRIVATE LUNCHEON. THEIR FIRST OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT CAME AFTER LUNCH, WHEN THEY CALLED ON PRESIDENT COAST E SILVA AND HIS WIFE AT THE MARBLE, STEEL AND GLASS PALACIO DA ALVORADO ("PALACE OF THE DAWN") AND EXCHANGED GIFTS AND DECORATIONS. QUEEN ELIZABETH TOLD THE PRESIDENT AT A BANQUET THAT NIGHT THAT, IN THE TRAFFIC OF IDEAS, BRITAIN AND BRAZIL HAD MUCH TO OFFER EACH OTHER.

"BRITAIN AND BRAZIL ARE DEDICATED TO THE SAME INTERNATIONAL PRINCIPLES. WE WORK TO THE SAME PRACTICAL ENDS," SHE SAID.
