  • Description

South Vietnam's Constituent Assembly on Friday formally submitted to Head of State, Lieutenant-General Nguyen Van Thieu, the draft of the country's new constitution.

It was presented by the Assembly's Chairman, Mr Phan Khac Suu, three days before the deadline for completion of the Assembly's six months work. Present at the ceremony was Prime Minister Nguyen Cao Ky.

The Constitution provides for presidential elections, expected in September, and the establishment of civilian government. Under the constitution, the Assembly will remain in existence to draw up regulations governing the Presidential elections. It will also taken on full legislative powers from the time the new President is established until elections for a new House of Representatives are held.

The country's military leaders have already decided to accept the draft constitution without amendment. The document goes before a meeting of the 50-member Armed Forces Council tomorrow (Monday) for formal approval and is to be published within a month.
