  • Description

West Germany's Chancellor, Herr Willy Brandt on Saturday (24 June) became the first member of a West German government to travel across East Germany to Berlin by train.

Herr Brandt arrived at the Zoologicher Gartan Station in West Berlin to attend a meeting of the national executive of his Social Democratic Party. He will also be present at a congress in West Berlin of the Federation of West German Trade Unions.

The Chancellor's train trip follows the signing on June the 4th of the four-power Berlin Agreement, which ensures unimpeded access by road or rail for West Germans visiting West Berlin.

The journey from Bonn took ten hours, and Herr Brandt travelled in a private carriage coupled to a regular passenger train.
