    MR. V.V.GIRI, VICE-PRESIDENT ELECT OF INDIA, ARRIVED IN NEW DELHI ON THURSDAY. HE FLEW INTO PALAM AIRPORT WHERE HE WAS MET BY UNION RAILWAY MINISTER POONANCHA, AND MANY RELATIVES.

    MR. GIRI WAS GARLANDED AT THE AIRPORT, A TRADITIONAL SIGN OF WELCOME. HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT HE WOULD TRY TO FULFILL HIS NEW ROLE SUCCESSFULLY.

    UNTIL RECENTLY MR. GIRI WAS GOVERNOR OF MYSORE STATE. HE STUDIED LAW IN DUBLIN BEFORE EMBARKING ON A CAREER IN INDIAN POLITICS THAT TOOK HIM THROUGH THE GOVERNORSHIP OF UTTAR PRADESH, KERALA, AND MYSORE STATES. IN 1952 HE JOINED PRIME MINISTER NEHRU'S CABINET AS LABOUR MINISTER, BUT RESIGNED BECAUSE HE DIDN'T AGREE WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S AMENDMENT OF A LABOUR TRIBUNAL'S AWARD TO BANK EMPLOYEES.

    IN HIS NEW ROLE AS VICE-PRESIDENT HE WILL PRESIDE OVER INDIA'S UPPER HOUSE, THE COUNCIL OF STATES, AND ACT AS PRESIDENT IN THE EVENT OF THE PRESIDENT'S DEATH OR RESIGNATION UNTIL THE ELECTION OF A NEW PRESIDENT.
