Oxi Day was celebrated throughout Cyprus by Greek Cypriots October 28. It marks the anniversary of Greece's rejection of the Italian ultimatum of 1940 and Greece's entry into the war on the side of the allies. Under the ultimatum, Italy demanded that her troops should be allowed to pass through Greece. ("Oxi" means "No").
In Nicosia, Archbishop Makarios and Greek Consul, Mr.Christopoulos, took part in a ceremony at Phaneromeni Church, and afterwards attended a parade at the Greek Consulate of schoolchildren, trade unionists and members of other organisations, in the company of the Mayor and leading Greek Cypriot personalities.
In recent years, Oxi Day has been associated with demonstrations in support of self determination for Cyprus.
