  • Description

Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers turned out to greet the Apollo 15 astronauts on Tuesday (23 August) when they made their first official visit since their 12-day trip to the moon.

The crowds lined the route of the spacemen's motorcade in midtown Manhattan and massed outside the city hall, where there was a ceremony of welcome and Mayor John Lindsay made a speech.

Astronauts David Scott, James Irwin and Al Worden, together with Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Irwin, seemed awed by the size of the welcome. "This is the most impressive thing I've seen since we left Hadley" (their base on the moon) Scott said at the ceremony.

Later the astronauts visited the United the United Nations where Secretary General U Thant presented them with medals specially minted for visiting dignitaries.
